e-Freight  European e-Freight capabilities for Co-modal transport

The e-Freight project has been aimed at:

  • Providing IT Capabilities supporting EU freight transport stakeholders to have a common, standard framework for freight transport in the European Community and, as far as possible internationally, adhering to EU policy on co-modality
  • Facilitating the use of different transport modes for an optimal and sustainable utilisation of European freight transport resources.
e-Freight is aligned with Key Initiative 7 of the White Paper on transport 2011 on Multimodal transport of goods:
  1. A standard framework for freight information exchange covering all transport modes and all stakeholders.
  2. A single European transport document for all carriage of goods, irrespective of mode should be developed along with all the necessary legislative support
  3. A single window (single access point) and one stop shopping for administrative procedures in all modes.
The main outputs of the e-Freight project are:  
  •  The e-Freight Framework
  •  The e-Freight model driven software development Platform using zAppDev
  •  e-Freight applications:

- The Next Generation Single Window
- e-waybill
- transport planning, monitoring and completion,


The e-Freight Framework

The Blueprint for e-Freight Solutions is the e-Freight Framework The e-Freight Framework provides an integrated view of key processes undertaken by the main stakeholders in Freight Transport & Logistics including five UBL standardised messages plus two new ones addressing EU policy (Common Reporting Schema: CRS and Multimodal eWaybill:MWB)  


The information being exchanged is:

      Between Logistics Demand and Logistics Supply:

    TSD: Transport Service description, a description of available transport services in a standard format that enables detection and linking of services into transport chains.

    TEP: Transport Execution Plan (booking or transport instruction) describing what is to be transported, the origin and destination, the timing, and links to the terms and conditions.

    GII: Goods item Itinerary, describing the different stages through which the cargo will be transported.

    TES: Transport Execution Status, providing status of progress and cargo (and vehicle) condition

    MWB: an electronic multimodal Waybill developed in the e-Freight project. The legal issues are investigated by the Finnish project InterTran .

      Between Logistics Supply and Transportation Network Management

    TPS: Transport Progress Status, enabling interaction between Logistics Services provider and Transportation Network Manager in order to establish the most reliable Estimated Arrival Time for a given vehicle at a given port, terminal, etc.

      Between Logistics Supply and Regulation Enforcement

    CRS: Common Reporting Schema, including all information necessary for all forms of reporting to authorities, independent upon mode of transport and geography in Europe.

Additionally a number of container or cargo or vehicle monitoring messages are being considered.
