In a changing landscape, under the pressure of the economic downturn, the maritime sector's strategy needs to be adapted and reviewed. This review will take place in the context of the review and framing of new policies and will have to take account of them.
The up-coming Strategy Technology Transport Plan (STTP) will constitute, together with the previous policies, the sectoral frame in which MESA will act under the guidance of the Innovation Union communication which frames the innovation strategy that will need to be refined for the waterborne sector, creating the conditions for a seamless transition from research results to market.
The MESA method of work is structured to foster new market needs, innovative ideas and research gaps through several implementation measures and groups such as:
The broad MESA membership is constituted by highly skilled and innovation minded professional and scientists;
A Foresight Support Group is foreseen to ensure forward looking visionary innovation and research activities. The group will set the scene for the Thematic Technology Groups dealing with relevant technology areas of the maritime business.
An Integration Group represents the forum that will guarantee the uptake of the visionary and innovative thinking to be translated into strategic action.
Furthermore an innovative WIKI based platform for discussion and ideas harvesting among the WATERBORNE stakeholders is foreseen to stimulate the ideas to flow in the daily work of the MESA project.
MESA will navigate through this complexity addressing the entire WATERBORNE TP Research Agenda areas and priorities. It has identified four major themes (implemented via Thematic Technology Groups on Energy Efficiency, Safety, Production, E-Maritime) and is performing an in-depth analysis and assessment of the achievements at EU and National level
MESA will impact on the following five FP7 Activities under the Sustainable Surface Transport Priorities:
THE GREENING OF SURFACE TRANSPORT considering greening as an opportunity for competitiveness.
IMPROVING SAFETY AND SECURITY creating a forum of experts to streamline RDI priorities in the area of Safety and Security for maritime transport.
STRENGTHENING COMPETITIVENESS by a synergic combination of long term foresight on trends (societal, market and regulatory) with medium term technical capabilities as assessed in the TTGs.
CROSS-CUTTING ACTIVITIES for implementation of the sub-theme programme through coordination with other ETPs and European and National bodies and authorities.
